Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Animation films have become a dynamic tool for education, combining visual appeal with storytelling to convey complex messages in an engaging manner. In the context of cultural heritage, animations provide a unique platform to teach history, traditions, and values, especially to younger audiences. In Kwami Local Government Area, Gombe State, where cultural erosion is a growing concern, the use of animation films offers an innovative approach to preserving and transmitting cultural knowledge (Adamu & Mohammed, 2023). Studies highlight that animated content is particularly effective in engaging children and fostering an appreciation for cultural identity (Ibrahim, 2024).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The gradual loss of cultural heritage in Kwami is exacerbated by globalization and limited efforts to document and teach local traditions. While animation films have the potential to address this issue, their use in teaching cultural heritage remains underexplored in the region. This gap necessitates a study on the effectiveness of animation films in preserving and promoting cultural values among the people of Kwami (Garba, 2023).

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the content of animation films used for teaching cultural heritage in Kwami.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of animation films in engaging audiences and fostering cultural understanding.
  3. To identify challenges in using animation films as educational tools for cultural preservation.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What themes are covered in animation films about cultural heritage in Kwami?
  2. How effective are these films in teaching cultural values and traditions?
  3. What challenges affect the use of animation films in cultural education?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Animation films effectively enhance cultural awareness and understanding in Kwami.
  2. Positive reception of animated content promotes cultural preservation.
  3. Limited access to animation films reduces their impact on cultural education.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on using innovative media for cultural education, offering practical insights for educators, filmmakers, and policymakers in Gombe State and beyond.
